Abstract: Limbic Rehabilitation: A Novel Treatment Approach for Lifestyle Exposure Related Neurotoxicity.

The focus of this presentaton is to introduce limbic system rehabilitation as a viable treatment method for Chemical Sensitivities. This presentation concentrates on the focus area of outlining a psycho-neurological assessment and describing a treatment for the effects of neurotoxicity commonly found in over-lapping illnesses including Chemical Sensitivities, Fibromyalgia, Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, Electric Hypersensitivity Syndrome and Post Traumatic Stress Disorder.

Limbic system dysfunction may be the result of 1) physical, (head, neck or spinal injury, viral, bacterial, chemical) and/or 2) psychological and emotional traumas. Both etiologies have the ability to damage and alter neurological function of the limbic system. In healthy individuals, the limbic system serves as a protective gate to analyze and filter incoming stimuli and assigns a level of threat importance to these stimuli. When the limbic system is damaged, this filtering process can become impaired and alter the way that the brain and body interprets, encodes and responds to any sensory stimuli. The resulting cross wiring establishes involuntary trauma patterns that over-activate threat, protective and survival mechanisms. For example in the chemically sensitive patient, the limbic system may assign a high threat level to non-noxious stimuli. As the limbic system processes neurological information at basic brainstem levels it highly influences both unconscious responses and conscious behaviors. Over time the impairment and the resulting pattern of distorted perception and reaction (hypersensitivity) becomes habitual and can result in a range of neurological, immunological, inflammatory, and endocrine system abnormalities.

Unbiased raw data has been compiled that demonstrates marked improvement and instances of full recovery from Chemical Sensitivities, over a six-month treatment period using a limbic system rehabilitation therapy. The QEESI, The Quick Environmental Exposure and Sensitivity Inventory - is a standardized questionnaire for measuring chemical intolerances for research and clinical applications. The QEESI Questionnaire was used to measure symptoms both before and after the limbic system rehabilitation therapy in 26 subjects. Following therapy, QEESI scores improved on average38%± 7.5%. The patient response rate was 65% and 38% of patients achieved remission as defined by QEESI.
